Estimator

In statistics, an estimator is a rule for calculating an estimate of a given quantity based on observed data: thus the rule (the estimator), the quantity of interest (the estimand) and its result (the estimate) are distinguished. For example, the sample mean is a commonly used estimator of the population mean.

There are point and interval estimators. The point estimators yield single-valued results. This is in contrast to an interval estimator, where the result would be a range of plausible values. "Single value" does not necessarily mean "single number", but includes vector valued or function valued estimators.

Estimation theory is concerned with the properties of estimators; that is, with defining properties that can be used to compare different estimators (different rules for creating estimates) for the same quantity, based on the same data. Such properties can be used to determine the best rules to use under given circumstances. However, in robust statistics, statistical theory goes on to consider the balance between having good properties, if tightly defined assumptions hold, and having less good properties that hold under wider conditions.

Examples of use of statistical estimate
1. "It was never intended as a real statistical estimate," he told the hearing.
2. While the risk of a single cot death was approximately one in 8,500 – which Prof Meadow squared to reach his one in 73 million figure for two deaths – the "extreme rarity" of such an event made the statistics "somewhat unreliable". "It was never intended as a real statistical estimate," he said, explaining why he wrote to Mrs Clark‘s solicitors.
3. Prof Fleming, who was a medical leader in the Government‘s Back to Sleep campaign that dramatically reduced the number of cot deaths, told the panel that while the risk of a single cot death was approximately one in 8,500, the "extreme rarity" of such an event made the statistic "somewhat unreliable". He added÷ "It was never intended as a real statistical estimate." Mrs Clark was jailed in 1''' but cleared by the Court of Appeal in 2003.
4. Prof Fleming told the hearing that the "extreme rarity" of a single cot death in an affluent family – one in 8,543 – made the statistic "somewhat unreliable". He said÷ "It was never intended as a real statistical estimate." Prof Meadow told the jury that to work out the risk of two cot deaths in a family like the Clarks, one would multiply 8,543 by 8,543 to reach a risk of one in 73 million.
5. According to Professor Peter Fleming, a child health expert at Bristol University, Professor Meadow relied on medical research that Professor Fleming had written to supply a statistic, even though it was clear that the original work "was never intended as a real statistical estimate." Professor Fleming was giving evidence at the General Medical Council this morning where Professor Meadow is charged with serious medical misconduct.
